Lady Liberty, as the statue is sometimes called, was a gift from the French memory the American Revolution.

Between 1820 and 1920, about 34 million people immigrated to the United States. For many immigants, their first look of Amercia was the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Emma Lazarus who is a Jewish American poet saw the statue as a flashing light to the world.

She wrote a poem which was carved on the platform until this day.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she With silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Some interesting facts: -Height: 305 feet (93 m). 354 steps lead from the entry to the crown.

-The seven rays of Lady Libertys crown mean the seven seas and seven continents.

-There are 25 windows in the crwon, which symbolize 25 gemstones found on the earth.

-The book, which the statue holds in her left hand, reads (in Roman numerals) July 4th, 1776. ...
