The purpose of this report is to inform the Board of United Nations Global Compact about how the corporate social responsibility(CSR) has been implemented in Romania in the last year. What is more, our aim is to establish how corporations operate in this field in Romania, that is if they are indeed social responsible by including the CSR principles promoted at international level in their activity.
CSR in global vision
Global Compact is a program initiated by the General Secretary of United Nations aiming a partnership between the UN and the corporations, in order to achieve a better sustainable development at global level. CSR, in the vision of international institutions, is a concept which refers to companies' contribution for developing a modern society. The United Nations, along with the European Union and The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) are the most important international organisms involved in creating a guide that defines CSR and establishes indicators to evaluate it more transparently. These indicators are criteria for establishing different types of CSR programs. The cause promotion is a program developed by a company that contributes financially to raise public awareness and to mobilize the public in order to donate or to volunteer for a cause. Another type of CSR programs that companies develop in Romania is the cause related marketing(CRM), in which the corporation commits to donate in favor of a cause a sum that depends on the sales in a certain period. The corporate social marketing(CSM) is a program based on the company's purpose to change a negative behavior or to convince people adopting a positive behavior. The most ancient initiatives of CSR activities were the corporate philanthropy actions, consisting of the company's direct involvement with money or products to support a cause. Community volunteering is a type of initiative of a company to encourage its employees to volunteer for supporting the community, a NGO or a cause. The last but not least are the socially responsible business practices that are very common among companies that improve their operating style through volunteering, in order to contribute both to the general good of the society and to the environmental protection. CSR projects in Romania are mostly developed in the fallowing fields: education, environment, social and human rights.
