2.4.3. The Direct Object Clause

The Direct Object Clauses may take the form of embedding by complementation ('that' clauses, infinitive clauses, -ing clauses, dependent interrogative clauses), as well as by relativisation (Independent Relative Clauses / IRCs).

2.4.3.1. The 'That' Direct Object Clause

The conjunction that may be deleted except when in initial position:

I know 1/ (that) he will come tomorrow. 2/ (S2: Direct Object Clause)

'That' clauses may have three types of VP:

a). with the Verb in the Indicative (i.e. finite). This is the most common type:

e.g. He noticed 1/ that something was wrong. 2/

b). putative 'should' (i.e. the Analytical Subjunctive) is used in Direct Object Clauses after transitive verbs such as: ask, decree, desire, dictate, command, order, demand, permit, propose, recommend, request, direct, require, suggest, urge, etc.:

e.g. I suggest 1/ that he should go now.
